29 Nov 16 – Jim Marcely and tutor John Schulke meet with Chess Club Coordinator Alice Sequiera and her players at St. Mary’s School (League City).  John works with intermediate players and Jim work with novices.   We reach an agreement for John to be the tutor and move the team toward forming a team.  CICSF gives Alice Sequeira five chess sets, a demonstration board, and opening strategy cards for the club/team.  CICSF will provide five more chess sets and more opening strategy cards.  The first full session will start on Monday, 5 Dec.  Kinder Foundation funds are allocated for John’s tutor fees.

24 Nov 16 – The first day of chess at St. Jerome Catholic School (A Kinder Chess School) will be on Wednesday 11 Jan 17.  Nathan Kinman will tutor.  CICSF will provide ten chess sets to the school.

 

23 Nov 16 – St. Jerome’s School has a Faculty Sponsor available on Wednesdays!  If tutor Nathan Kinman can make it Wednesdays, we can start as soon as the school can get the word out to the students.  If Nathan not available, we’ll find another tutor which may delay startup until VIRTUS cleared.  St Jerome is one our original Kinder Chess Schools.

 

20 Nov 16 – CICSF pays Andrew Koenigsberg for five chess tutoring sessions and Virgie Ricardo for five sessions of chess team management at St. Peter the Apostle School.

 

19 Nov 16 – Jim Marcely contacts John Schulke (from the CICSF Prospective Coaches list).  John has 18 years experience coaching chess teams and tutoring individual players around the Clear Lake area.  He’s willing to coach the team at St. Mary’s (League City).  He’ll accompany Jim to St. Mary’s to meet with Alice Sequiera, their Chess Club Coordinator, on 29 Nov.  John will need VIRTUS training and qualification before he starts..

 

18 Nov 16 – Jim Marcely buys CICSF business stationery ($108).

 

15 Nov 16 – In response to an e-mail from Alice Sequiera, the Chess Club Coordinator at St. Mary’s School (League City), Jim Marcely delivers his CICSF guide, How to Have a Chess Program at Your School, to the school.  Aliceinvites Jim to visit and observe a Chess Club session at St. Mary’s on 29 Nov.  St. Mary’s is a candidate Kinder Chess School, if we are unable to find a chess club Team Manager/Faculty Sponsor at St. Jerome’s.

 

14 Nov 16 – Bob Bartel teaches chess for the first time at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School, our second Kinder Chess School.  Bob is excellent.  Delia Trango, the Team Manager, and Jim Marcely are there, observing and helping.  Jim gives Delia the CICSF guide, How to Have a Chess Program at Your School.  Ten kids participate.  Four parents of basketball players indicate their boys will participate after BB season is over. We’re guessing OLF chess club will mature to about twenty, with a competitive chess team of about ten players.   

 

13 Nov 16 – Anonymous donor contributes $334 to CICSF for St. Peter the Apostle School chess scholarship.

 

11- 13 Nov 16 – CICSF pays half ($60) the entry fees for two St. Peter the Apostle School players at the State Grade Tournament at the North Houston Hilton.  Jim Marcely recruits Mary Beth Hudson as a prospective coach/tutor/team manager in the Clear Lake/NASA area.  Mary Beth was formerly the “Team Mom” for a strong chess team at Westbrook Intermediate School.  

 

10 Nov 16 – Tutor Ted Ingram meets gives Resurrection Catholic School, our first Kinder Chess School, their first lesson.  He’s excellent.  Faculty Sponsor Annette Medellin, representing the principal, is there throughout the session.  Hector Lopez is out of town.  Mrs. Carranza volunteers to assist.  Jim Marcely is there also, helping Ted.  Ten kids participate.  Three basketball players indicate they will participate after BB season.  As word gets around, we expect more will participate.  We estimate about twenty by the end of the year.  At the request of one of the kids, CICSF loans two chess sets to the library so the chess club kids can play on days other than Thursdays.  CICSF will be paying Ted monthly from funds contributed by the Kinder Foundation.  

 

4 Nov 16 – Tutor Bob Bartel and Jim Marcely participate in Family Night at Our Lady of Fatima School (a Kinder Chess School).  Bob meets the new chess Team Manager, Delia Trango.  Bob and Jim set up a chess corner with six chess sets.  After the school program (students dressing as saints), the chess corner is the main attraction.  There are six games going on, most of the time, some with players who know the rules, and some who don’t.  Parents and other students gather round:  a lot of interest and a lot of questions.  The principal assures us that OLFCS chess club will be ready for its first meeting on Monday, 14 November.  The principal also tells Bob that he expects OLFCS to win the Cardinal DiNardo Cup in May.  We are asked to shut down the chess corner at 10PM so they can lock up.

 

4 Nov 16 – E-mail from St Jerome School principal indicates no faculty sponsor/team manager (FS/TM) has stepped forward yet.  Jim Marcely offers a stipend.  If no FS/TM found, CICSF will drop effort at St. Jerome School and open conversation with St. Mary’s School (League City).  They are interested in CICSF support.

 

3 Nov 16 – Jim Marcely pays $43 for CICSF supplies, and orders 24 chess notation pads ($40) for Resurrection School.  Ted intends to start notation right away.

 

3 Nov 16 – Jim Marcely meets with Resurrection School principal, tutor Ted Ingram, Coach Hector Benitez and Team Manager Annette Medellin.  Chess club will be on Thursdays in the Science Lab, starting 10 Nov.  CICSF provides nine chess sets and one demonstration board.  Ted Ingram’s fee will be charged to CICSF Kinder subaccount.

31 Oct 16 - Our Lady of Fatima (OLFCS) School (Galena Park) has a volunteer Team Manager!  Bob Bartel, our CICSF designated tutor, has completed his VIRTUS refresher training and is on the Archdiocesan VIRTUS-qualified list.  Jim Marcely and Bob will meet with the principal, team manager and parents on Friday 4 Nov at OLFCS Family Night.  Bob Bartel is available to tutor on Mondays only.  Kinder Foundation funds are earmarked for the OLFCS chess program. 

 

31 Oct 16 – Resurrection Catholic School’s (RCS) team manager, Hector Benitez, has completed VIRTUS training, and has been entered on the Archdiocesan VIRTUS qualified list.  Hector has found two parents who have volunteered to help with the program!  Ted Inram agrees to be the designated tutor if Thursdays are available.  We should be able to start soon.  Kinder Foundation funds are earmarked for the RCS chess program

 

27 Oct 16 – CICSF submits a request for funding from the Brown Foundation.  The money will be used to sustain the chess program at St. Peter the Apostle school through the rest of the 2016 -17 school year.

 

21 Oct 16 – Jim Marcely buys new MacIntosh Book laptop ($1,228) for CICSF.  The intent is that it be the CICSF corporate computer in order to segregate CICSF from his family and personal information.

 

19 Oct 16 – Houston Endowment declines opportunity to fund Chess in Christian Schools.

 

18 Oct 16 – CICSF pays Virgie Ricardo $200 for chess team management at St. Peter the Apostle School.  St. Peter the Apostle has used the last of its chess team reserve funds earned by hosting the two tournaments last year.  The funds were used exclusively to pay Andrew Koenigsberg for tutoring and Virgie Ricardo for team management.

 

17 Oct 16 – Jim Marcely’s wife, Carole, contributes $1,800 to CICSF.  The money will be used to sustain the chess program at St. Peter the Apostle School throughthe holidays.  That gives CICSF some breathing space to find other funding for St. Peter the Apostle School.  God bless Carole Marcely!

 

14 Oct 16 – CASE for Kids announces grants.  Unfortunately St. Peter the Apostle School is not awarded a District D grant for its chess program.  CICSF had expected to have the St. Peter’s grant renewed.  Suddenly the chess program at St. Peter’s is in jeopardy.  The good news is that St. Martha’s school is awarded a District E grant.  CICSF helped both schools write their grant requests.

 

11 Oct 16 – Jim Marcely and tutor Nathan Kinman visit St. Jerome Catholic School (SJCS) for discussions with principal about CICSF support to start up of chess program.  CICSF support awaits identification of a team manager/faculty coordinator from school.

19 Aug 16 – An anonymous donor contributes $474 to CICSF.  CICSF pays St. Peter the Apostle School fees and one month tuition for one chess scholarship.  Intent is to keep a very promising player in the chess program at St. Peter’s.  Parent had lost job, and was withdrawing player from St. Peter’s.  Thank you, anonymous donor!

11Aug 16 – James Marcely completes How to Have a Chess Program in Your School, a guide for principals, coaches and teachers based on his experience coaching a successful chess program at St. Peter the Apostle School in Houston, TX.  It will be a CICSF document to be given to any Christian school that expresses interest in having a chess program. 

 

4 Aug 16 - The IRS determines the Chess in Christian Schools Foundation to be a tax-exempt non-profit corporation in compliance with IRS Code, Section 501 (c ) (3).  This allows CICSF to solicit funds from the public, foundations, and government agencies, and have gifts be tax exempt for the donors.

7 May 16 - St. Peter the Apostle School hosts the Catholic School Chess Championship Tournament.  Seventy six players from ten Catholic Schools participate.  St Martha Schools takes first place,  winningthe Cardinal DiNardo Chess Cup for the coming year, and a smaller Championship Trophy for permanent retention.  St. Thomas Moore School wins the Second Place trophy, followed by St. Peter the Apostle School (Third), St. Helen School (Fourth) and St Edward School (Fifth).  Dr. Julie Vogel, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Galveston – Houston, awards the trophies.

 

25 Apr – 7 May – Jim Marcely and Clarence Brooks provide food, drinks and            materials ($1006) for the Catholic School Chess Championship Tournament.         The tournament earns $1,240 from the sale of food and drinks o players,            their families and coaches.  Half the proceeds ($620) go to the school’s   general fund, and $620 is reserved by the school for future expenses of the        chess program.

 

31 Mar 16 – CICSF pays $50 for new faceplate and property brand for the Cardinal Dinardo Chess Cup

 

21 Mar 16 – CICSF refiles for IRS determination as a tax-exempt non-profit corporation in accordance with IRS Code, Section 501 (c) (3). 

 

3 Mar 16 – Cardinal Dinardo, the Archbishop of Galveston – Houston, gives permission for his name to be engraved on the Catholic School Chess Championship trophy.  The Cardinal Dinardo Chess Cup is a very large “traveling” trophy that is retained for one year by the school chess team that wins the annual Catholic School Chess Championship trophy.  The trophy was commissioned by Jim Marcely before the formation of CICSF.  It was formerly named “The Gold Cup” or, informally, “Da Big Humma-Humma Trophy!”

 

9 Apr 16 – St. Peter the Apostle School hosts an open scholastic chess tournament.  Three hundred of the best scholastic players from the Houston area participate .  St. Peter’s school earns $3,200 by selling food and drinks to the players, their families and coaches.  Half the proceeds ($1,600) go to the school’s general fund, and half ($1,600) is reserved by the school for future expenses of the chess team.  Over the period 23 Feb to 9 April Jim Marcely and Clarence Brooks pay $2,397 for food, drinks and supplies supporting this tournament.

 

1 Mar 16 – The Harris County Department of Education CASE for Kids City Connections awards St. Peter the Apostle School $2,500 to support its chess program.  CICSF Directors Jim Marcely and Clarence Brooks wrote the winning proposal.
